If I were forced to make a choice, the short story would have to be my favorite writing tool.

Yes, tool.  It is all writing and we have tools to convey emotion, events, grief, happiness and the most elusive and mis understood of all states of being, joy.

The short story does not allow a writer to cheat and get away with it.
