Brona Lampsted lived in rural Indiana.  Her life was quiet and isolated.  Her Father, a well respected farmer and successful even in the dread depression.  But Brona knew and understood that he was pitied in their community by what many thought her odd behavoir and the fact that both were abandon early on by her Mother.

But in 1933 the world was changing and even their quiet community could not avoid the onslaught of trouble.  Studebaker was on the brink and many were out of work, including a young German engineer who is looking for a safe place to bring the remainder of his family to the US.

While Brona's father takes up Rutger's cause Brona comes face to face with questions Rutger has regarding her mother's abaondonment so many years ago - practical questions that causes Brona to wonder why they haven't been asked before.
